MANAGERIAL SKILLS

A manager is person who dealing with employees, so his must requires some qualities, that is basic for his success. If he can communicate well with peoples that is very useful in his managerial life. According to Katz, managers need to employ four types of skill in order to perform their tasks successfully, independent of whether the management is of a small scale enterprise or a global organisation. They need:

  • Communication Skills – to be able to send and receive information as the basis of all aspects of work. Managers spend most of their time communicating in one form or another – in writing, orally and, crucially, by listening – and need to able to communicate not only factual information effectively, but also feelings, thoughts and attitudes.

Interpersonal Skills – to be able to lead, motivate and work with others. An organisation's most valuable resource is the people who work for it. Without their commitment and effective performance, there is nothing. So, interpersonal skills are a fundamental part of every manager’s job regardless of the function that is worked in they are as important to the accountant as they are to the marketer.
  • Motivation skill- manager is a person who deals with employees in an oragnization. So he has lot of subordiantes, if he requires motivating skill to complete his task. If he motivated his employees in good way, then he can make good relation with them.
  • Conceptual Skills – to be able to diagnose and assess the various different types of issues and problems they face on a day-to-day basis. These skills are often difficult to develop in the manager as the person possessing them generally needs to have a good overview of the organisation at all levels, the business as a whole and its context in society generally. Charles Handy referred to a “helicopter factor” which he described as the ability of the manager to rise up above the business and observe the interrelationships of various factors both within the organisation and between the organisation and its environment. Conceptual skills are especially important for decision-making.
  • Technical Skills – to be able to undertake specialist tasks themselves, but also to manage the technical work of others. These types of skills may be defined as specific methods and techniques used in a specialist field. So, for example, an accountant has specific technical skills related to accountancy, the marketer has specific skills related to marketing and the computer programmer has specific skills for computing and so on.
  • Negotiation skill- negotiation skill is a part of communication skil, it means skill for making good realtion with peoples. That is good as a manager.
good manager Managers are also concerned with developing and improving the skills of the workforce for which they are responsible. It is the area of conceptual skills that we are most concerned with here – the ability to bring critical analysis to bear on issues and problems – but before we move on to look at some of the underlying techniques and approaches for this, we should start thinking about problems themselves and the how we approach their resolution.
