Individuals
have different abilities, personalities, learning experience and
attitudes. It is not surprising that they perceive work in different
ways. Differences between individuals can be a source of developing
creativity or the root of conflict and frustration. Skills of the
management is to be able to match the needs of the individuals with
that of the needs of the organisation .so both will be better off and
satisfaction will be achieved. Emphasising individual differences and
valuing diversity is a key driver in the search for equality at work.
Attitudes
are evaluative statements either favourable or unfavourable
concerning objects, people or events.
Attitude
has got 3components:
- Cognitive component
These
are value statements. It set the stage for the more critical part of
an attitude
These
are the thought inside a person and they are difficult to measure.
Eg:
the belief that discrimination is wrong.
- Affective or emotional component
Affect
is the emotional or feeling segment of an attitude and is reflected
in the statement.
These
are the statements that one makes out of their thought.
Eg:”I
don’t like john because he discriminate against minorities”.
- Behavioural component
It
refers to an intention to behave in a certain way towards someone or
something .these is the action side of an attitude. They are quite
easy to see and measure.
Eg:
one might choose to avoid john because of the feeling about him that
he discriminate.
Doing
attitude is made up of three components, cognition, affect and
behaviour. It is helpful in understanding their complexity and the
potential relationship between attitude and behaviour but for clarity
sake, keep in mind that the term attitude essentially refers to the
affect part of the three components.
Application
of attitude
- Job
- Selection time
- Change management
- Team work
We
can evaluate ones attitude in his job by measuring job satisfaction,
job involvement and organisational commitment.
Cognitive
Dissonance: it is the term given to the discomfort felt when we act
in a way that is consistent with our true beliefs.
We
can check the attitude of a person at selection time. At the
interview time ask the question related with the attitude. The
questions want to make a conflict in his/her mind. Then there will be
a cognitive dissonance. Then the interviewee may show his/her right
attitude.
Change
management is a systematic approach to dealing with change, both from
the perspective of an organisation and on the individual level.
Change management has at least three different aspects including
adapting to change, controlling change and effecting change. A
proactive approach to dealing with change is at the core of all three
aspects. For an organisation, change management means defining and
implementing procedures and/or technologies to deal with changes in
the business environment and to profit from changing opportunities.
