CHAPTER 3

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

IMPORTANT OF EMPLOYEES IN AN ORGANISATION

Employees are the main asset of organisation. They were striving for the goals of organisation. So employees are also the factors of
production, there will consider the satisfaction of employees in organisation. It will affect the objective of organisation. The employees were work in better mind or be satisfied it, will help to the organisation very much. But the employees were in dissatisfied; it will also affect organisational growth. It will create absenteeism; turn over, lesser production... etc. so every management will try to keep employee satisfaction level in better manner.
Of all factors of production man is by far most importance. The important of human factor in any type of co operative endeavour cannot be emphasizes the over whelming importance of this factor is due to unique following characteristics.

  1. This is the only resource, which is able to produce an output greater than input.
  2. This resource is animate; active; living. It has feelings; think; loving; affection.
  3. Human resource is most complex and unpredictable behaviour. So it’s very hard to handling.
  4. Each one has different his own background.

For the success of organisation the corporation of employees
is important one. So it is necessary to ensure the job satisfaction
in every organisation by management. The corporation of employees will lead such organisation in to prosperity.
The term job satisfaction refers to an employee’s general attitude towards his job. It is based on many factors that may be internal or external. Job satisfaction is necessity to retain the employees in an organisation
Job satisfaction is defined as,

Pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting, from
The appraisal of one’s job or job experiences”
- E.A.LOCKE -
Individual reaction to the job experience”
- BERRY -

THEORIES OF EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION

  1. EQUITY THEORY:

According to equity theory, a discrepancy between what is expected in dealing with the people and what actually happened
when dealt with the people are typically reason for a person feel
injustice had occurred.
According to Adams equity theory an individual’s level of job satisfaction is influenced by how fairly he believes he is being treated in comparison to others in the work environment.

  1. NEED FULLFILMENT THEORY:

Abraham Maslow’s hierarchical model of
human can be used to identify the factors affecting job satisfaction. The model state that individuals experienced a hierarchy of needs such as,
psychological needs, safety needs, social needs, self esteem needs,
and self actualisation needs.
Maslow’s model can be used by individuals to develop a sense of job satisfaction in their jobs, if they utilize a bottom-top perspective on job satisfaction.

  1. DISCREPANCY THEORY:
According to Lawyer, discrepancy theory is the result of the difference between an actual outcome of a person received and, the expected to receive.
If actual outcome is higher than the expected income, then the result is job satisfaction. And if the actual outcome is lower than the expected income then the result is dissatisfaction.

  1. TWO FATOR THEORY:

Hertzberg is developed the two factor theory on the basis of motivation factors and hygiene factors. He states that the satisfaction is affected by the motivational factors and dissatisfaction is affected by the hygiene factors.
Here Hertzberg’s “two factor” theory emphasize that there are factors in the work place, that created satisfaction (motivators), and those which lead to dissatisfaction if they are not present
(hygiene factors).

Motivate factors: achievement, recognition, responsibility, and advancement.

Hygiene factors: monetary reward, supervision, policy and administration, working condition, and security.

In summary the theories respectively tells that as

  • Job satisfaction is a function of is positively related to the degree to which the various motivators and satisfier’s in the present job situation.

  • Job satisfaction is related to personal need and wants that satisfied in work situation to employees.

  • Job satisfaction is related to the characteristics of job.

EFFECT OF EMPOLYEE SATISAFACTION

  1. PRODUCTIVITY:

The productivity of the satisfied employee will be higher than that of the productivity of unsatisfied employees. If productivity is low in firm it will affect the success of organisation so employee satisfaction is a part of organisational success.

  1. EMPLOYEE TURN OVER:

  1. ORGANISATIONAL CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOUR:

EFFECT OF WELFARE MEASUARES ON JOB SATISFACTION

The welfare measures influence the sentiments of
workers and contribute to the maintenance of industrial place.
Labour welfare is thus one of the major determinants of
industrial relations. Apart from improved, morally and loyally,
welfare measures are significant to reduce absenteeism and
labour turn over In future. One of the trust areas in the personal
in future would be the creation of the type of organisational
environment, which will help to make the employees more satisfying.
Efficiency of work force is directly or indirectly with the condition and environments under which they are required to work. Even the most sincere employees, cannot contribute his productivity, if he is uncomfortable on the contrary, his productivity is bound to increase when he is comfortable at the working condition, and he is conscious of welfare amenities.
If the employee is forced to work, in the inadequate lighting conditions or polluted air, conditions his out put potentially will decline. Over heating of the environment are worsen than under heating. Although both are expensive in terms, of decline in the out put, since respiratory ailments would be caused by both the conditions.
Distraction and fatigue, which can be the causes of output decline, are also characterises of industrial development. In a marshal conditions of work life of the work force will affect the productivity. Adequate floor space, lighting, cleanliness, controlling humidity,
heat ventilation, drinking facility, rest room facility, noise, toilet facilities, meal, break time facility, medical aid facilities……. Etc. contributed
to the welfare positions of the workers substantially, affect the productivity.
So slowly the planning commission also realises the importance of labour welfare, when it is observed in order to get the best of a worker in the matter of production. Working condition is required to be improved to large extent. The worker should at least have the means and facilities to keep himself in a state of health and efficiency thus the satisfaction of the employees can be improved.
After the independence the govt: of India had passed
several acts such as the factories act, the employees state
insurance act, the minimum wage act, the payment wages act, and the industrial dispute act, to ensured fare deal to employees in a
various aspects of their jobs.
